Drake Baldwin powers Braves past Rockies 9-1 as Chris Sale dominates again

DENVER — Drake Baldwin homered and drove in four runs, Chris Sale allowed one run in seven innings and the Atlanta Braves rolled past the Colorado Rockies 9-1 on Saturday night. Austin Riley and Matt Olson also homered for the Braves, who won for the 14th time in 17 games and improved their MLB-best record to 24-10. Sale (6-1) gave up three hits and struck out 11 batters while earning his MLB-leading sixth win. In his last four starts, the nine-time All-Star has allowed just three earned runs with 33 strikeouts and seven walks over 26 innings. Braves right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. left in the second inning with left hamstring tightness. He was attempting to run out a grounder before he pulled up about halfway down the base path and grabbed at his left hamstring. He was replaced by Eli White in right field. Manager Walt Weiss said after the game that Acuña will get an MRI and the team likely wouldn’t know more about the extent of the injury until later Saturday or Sunday. Baldwin matched his single-game career high with three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle. PHOTOS: Drake Baldwin powers Braves past Rockies

Alex Zanardi obituary

ROME (AP) — Alex Zanardi, the Italian auto racing champion-turned-Paralympic gold medalist whose career was marked by two life-altering accidents, has died. He was 59.Zanardi’s family announced his death on Saturday, saying that he passed away on Friday night.“Alex died peacefully, surrounded by the affection of those closest to him,” the family said in a statement without providing a cause of death. In 2020, Zanardi was seriously injured in a handbike accident after crashing into an oncoming truck during a relay event in Tuscany. Zanardi suffered serious facial and cranial trauma in the crash and was put in a medically induced coma.Nearly 20 years earlier, Zanardi lost both of his legs in an auto racing crash.“Italy loses a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of turning every challenge of life into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity,” Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said on X. “Alex Zanardi knew how to bounce back every time, facing even the toughest challenges with determination, clarity, and a strength of spirit that was truly exceptional,” Meloni added. “He gave all of us much more than a victory: he gave hope, pride, and the strength to never give up. ... Thank you for everything, Alex.”

Stankoven, Andersen lead Hurricanes past Flyers 3-0 in Game 1 of 2nd-round series

RALEIGH, N.C. — Logan Stankoven scored twice to continue his postseason tear and the Carolina Hurricanes smothered the Philadelphia Flyers in a 3-0 victory Saturday night to open the second-round series. Jackson Blake also scored for Carolina, and Frederik Andersen stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of these playoffs and seventh in his postseason career. Game 2 of the series is Monday night in Raleigh, with Carolina yet to trail in any of its five postseason games so far after jumping to a 2-0 first-period lead in this one. “We had a good start, obviously,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “That’s what won the game.” Carolina closed a first-round sweep of Ottawa last weekend, then had an extended break while the Flyers battled to push past Pittsburgh in overtime of Game 6 on Wednesday night. That led to rest-versus-rust conversations about how the Eastern Conference’s top seed would start Saturday night. Instead, the Hurricanes pounced from the opening puck drop, a departure from how all four regular-season meetings went to overtime or a shootout. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordan Walker homered and Michael McGreevy shut out the punchless Dodgers for six innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Los Angeles 3-2 Saturday night for their sixth straight win.The Dodgers have lost a season-high four in a row and have gone five straight games without a home run for the first time since May 2015.After back-to-back doubles by Iván Herrera and Alec Burleson to start the third inning, Walker smashed a hanging split-fingered fastball from Roki Sasaki (1-3) just over the left-field wall for a 3-0 St. Louis lead. The 372-foot shot was Walker’s 10th home run and gave him a hit in seven consecutive plate appearances.McGreevy (2-2) benefited from double plays in four of the first five innings. Second baseman JJ Wetherholt started one by laying out to catch Shohei Ohtani’s line drive in the third, then he ranged far to his left on Teoscar Hernández’s grounder in the fourth to create another. McGreevy gave up three singles and a season-high three walks while striking out three. The Dodgers went without an extra-base hit.Max Muncy and Andy Pages had RBI singles in the ninth inning off Riley O’Brien before the St. Louis closer struck

Our Coblogger Stewart Baker Has Died
obituary/Reason

Our Coblogger Stewart Baker Has Died

It grieves me to report that our coblogger, and my friend, Stewart Baker died suddenly a few days ago at age 78. Stewart always wrote and spoke modestly, but he (alongside former District Judge Paul Cassell and former U.S. Commission on Civil Rights member Gail Heriot) was the most accomplished of any of us: In addition to a long and successful career as a lawyer at Steptoe & Johnson, he also served as General Counsel of the National Security Agency (1992-94) and as Assistant Secretary for Policy in DHS (2005-09). At the start of his career, after graduating from UCLA School of Law in 1976, he clerked for First Circuit Judge Frank Coffin and then for Justice John Paul Stevens. I invariably appreciated Stewart's incisive, knowledgeable, and thoughtful comments on many topics. His perspectives were usually quite conservative, at times more conservative than mine; but even when we disagreed, I always enjoyed reading his work and talking to him, and learned much from him. We also became good friends; I would often look him up when I visited D.C., and just had dinner with him two months ago. It's shocking to know that he is gone. As the Russians say

Alabama and Tennessee join rush of southern states moving to redraw maps after Supreme Court ruling

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Republican governors in Alabama and Tennessee have summoned lawmakers into special sessions this week seeking new congressional districts after the U.S. Supreme Court weakened a key provision of the Voting Rights Act.Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has called legislators back to Montgomery starting Monday to approve contingency plans for special primary elections in hopes that the Supreme Court will allow the state to switch congressional maps ahead of the November midterms. It’s a move that Republicans legislative leaders said would “give our state a fighting chance to send seven Republican members to Congress.” The seven-member delegation currently has two Democrats. In Tennessee, Republican Gov. Bill Lee also announced a special session starting Tuesday for the GOP-controlled Legislature to break up the state’s one Democratic-held House district, centered on the majority-Black city of Memphis. The Supreme Court decision striking down a majority-Black congressional district in Louisiana said the drawing of the district map relied too much on race. The ruling began reverberating through statehouses across the South as Republicans eyed the possibility of getting new lines in place for the 2026 midterm elections, or at least 2028. 6 MIN READ 4 MIN READ 2 MIN READ President

Meta’s historic loss in court could cost a lot more than $375 million

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico state prosecutors are seeking fundamental changes to Meta’s social media apps and algorithms to safeguard children in the second phase of a landmark trial on allegations that platforms such as Instagram have created a public safety hazard.Opening statements are scheduled Monday in the three-week bench trial to decide whether the platforms of Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, pose a public nuisance under state law.In the first phase, jurors ordered $375 million in civil penalties against Meta, determining that it knowingly harmed children’s mental health and concealed what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its platforms.Prosecutors are now asking a judge to impose fundamental changes aimed at reining in addictive features, improving age verification and preventing child sexual exploitation through default privacy settings and closer oversight. Meta has vowed to appeal the jury verdict and warned that it could eliminate Instagram and Facebook service in New Mexico if forced to comply with impractical mandates.“The fact that we’re having a trial on nuisance is itself a remarkable outcome,” said Eric Goldman, co-director of the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara University School of Law in California. “That theory is not well

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) — Nelly Korda delivered an early knockout punch Sunday and stretched her lead to as many as seven shots before cruising to the finish line with a 3-under 69 and a four-shot victory in the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba for her third win of the young season. One week after Korda crushed the field at The Chevron Championship for her third career major, she left everyone feeling hopeless at El Camaleon with precision that carried the No. 1 player in women’s golf to another dominant victory.Korda went 60 consecutive holes without a bogey, a streak that ended when it no longer mattered. She had a six-shot lead playing the 18th when she sent her drive to the right and deep into the tropical bushes, never finding the golf ball. She hit a provisional into a bunker, the next one into the gallery and finished by making a 20-foot putt for bogey, only her second of the tournament. Korda stretched out her arm and casually threw her right fist with whatever energy she had left. She finished at 17-under 271, four shots ahead Arpichaya Yubol of Thailand, who celebrated her 24th birthday with a 70 to finish alone

Iran closes Strait of Hormuz again over US blockade and fires on ships

The standoff over the Strait of Hormuz escalated again Saturday as Iran reversed its reopening of the crucial waterway and fired on ships attempting to pass, in retaliation after the United States pressed ahead with its blockade of Iranian ports.New attacks on the strait, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil normally passes, threatened to deepen the global energy crisis and push the countries into renewed conflict as the war entered its eighth week.A fragile ceasefire is due to run out by Wednesday. Iran said it had received new proposals from the United States, and Pakistani mediators were working to arrange another round of direct negotiations.Iran’s joint military command said “control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state ... under strict management and control of the armed forces.” It warned it would continue to block transits while the U.S. blockade remained in effect.Revolutionary Guard gunboats opened fire on a tanker and an unknown projectile hit a container vessel, damaging some containers, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. India’s foreign ministry said it summoned Iran’s ambassador over the “serious incident” of firing on two India-flagged merchant ships, especially after Iran earlier let

Jacob Mchangama & Jeff Kosseff Guest-Blogging About "The Future of Free Speech: Reversing the Global Decline of Democracy's Most Essential Freedom"

Free Speech |The Volokh Conspiracy | 5.3.2026 12:40 PM I'm delighted to report that Profs. Jacob Mchangama (Vanderbilt) & Jeff Kosseff (Naval Academy, moving this year to Minnesota) will be guest-blogging Monday to Wednesday about their new book, The Future of Free Speech: Reversing the Global Decline of Democracy's Most Essential Freedom. Here's the publisher's summary: An incisive examination of free speech's global decline and a framework for preserving expression in democratic societies. The Future of Free Speech confronts a stark truth: the right to speak freely is under siege. Once celebrated as a cornerstone of democratic societies, free expression is now met with growing suspicion and retaliation across the globe. Jacob Mchangama and Jeff Kosseff present a panoramic view of how we arrived at this pivotal moment. The authors examine a century in which speech rights expanded dramatically―including postwar democratic revolutions and the sweeping protections of the First Amendment―only to find those rights unraveling in the face of new political, technological, and cultural pressures. Today, liberal democracies are imposing speech controls, authoritarian regimes are cloaking censorship in democratic language, and digital platforms wield unprecedented power over global discourse. This book examines the backlash against free speech from all sides:

Kash Patel Got Arrested for Public Urination After a Night of Drinking

FBI Director Kash Patel was twice arrested in incidents involving alcohol, once for public intoxication and once for public urination after leaving a bar, he admitted in a 2005 letter about disclosures on his Florida Bar application. The letter obtained by The Intercept was part of Patel’s personnel file at the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office, where he once worked. The document, written “per instructions of my employer,” describes incidents of alcohol-related indiscretions not uncommon for those in their teens and twenties. Two decades later, as Patel pushes back against allegations that drinking is impairing his leadership of the nation’s top law enforcement agency, these arrests show how Patel’s alcohol use has been subjected to scrutiny before in his professional life. “In a gross deviation from appropriate conduct, we attempted to relieve our bladders while walking home.” One incident recounted by Patel occurred in 2005, about four months before he wrote the letter. At the time, he was a law student at Pace University in New York celebrating with friends. “We went to a few of the local bars and consumed some alcoholic drinks,” he wrote. When they walked home, they made a bad decision. “In a gross deviation from appropriate

Three die after suspected hantavirus outbreak on Atlantic cruise ship

World May 3, 2026 4:46 PM EDT CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has killed three people and sickened at least three others, the World Health Organization said Sunday. In a statement to The Associated Press, the WHO said an investigation was underway but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed. Hantavirus, found throughout the world, is spread by contact with urine or feces of infected rodents, most often rats or mice. One of the patients was in intensive care in a South African hospital, the U.N.'s health agency said, adding that it was working with authorities to evacuate two other passengers with symptoms from the ship. "Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing, and epidemiological investigations," WHO said. "Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew. Sequencing of the virus is also ongoing." READ MORE: What is hantavirus, the infection that killed Betsy Arakawa in New Mexico? The only other time that happened was in 1909, when the Chicago White Sox issued seven straight bases on balls to the Washington Senators. The Reds' record-tying string of walks began when Rhett Lowder walked Brandon Lowe with one out and no one base. Can Lakers survive Thunder? Predictions, odds and schedule for series

May 2, 2026Updated May 3, 2026, 5:01 p.m. ETThe Los Angeles Lakers advanced to the Western Conference semifinals and will face last year's champion, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in a best-of-seven series. The last time these franchises saw each other in the postseason was 2012.The majority of experts and bettors have counted the Lakers out against the Houston Rockets in the first round, but they prevailed and made it past them. But the Rockets aren't a championship team, the Thunder are.The same experts and bettors who counted Los Angeles out in the opening series are doubling down against Oklahoma City. And it makes sense.During their four matchups in the 2025-26 regular season, the Lakers lost all games by an average margin of 29.3 points, the worst regular-season point differential of any playoff matchup in NBA history. Luka Doncic didn't play in two of the four games. Of the two he did play in, he suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain during their April 2 meeting, causing him to leave early. The Lakers lost that game by 43 points and Doncic has been out since.Doncic won't be available to start the series against the Thunder and his timetable is relatively unknown,

Cameron Young calls tough penalty on himself, immediately gets rewarded by golf gods at Doral

DORAL, Fla. -- Cameron Young didn't have as easy of a time in the third round of the Cadillac Championship as he did while building a big lead Thursday and Friday. It didn't seem to matter, either.Young is still in full control at Trump National Doral, after his round of 2-under 70 on Saturday got him to 15 under for the week. He had a six-shot lead over a group that includes top-ranked Scottie Scheffler into a potentially rainy final round Sunday.“The tournament’s in his hands right now,” said Scheffler, who shot a 3-under 69 to get to 9 under — but hasn’t been able to close the gap on Young. “I can go out and have a really good round, and if he has another really good round he’s going to be a tough guy to catch. All I can do is go out and try and have a great round and see where that leaves me.”Si Woo Kim (69) and Kristoffer Reitan (69) also were 9 under. Ben Griffin 68), Nick Taylor (72) and Matt McCarty (69) were 8 under.Catching Young will be tough in any conditions. And nobody knows what awaits players Sunday at Doral.A lot of rain is

Jayson Tatum Decision Made Hours Before Celtics-76ers Game 7

Celtics star Jayson Tatum has been ruled out for Game 7 with left knee stiffnessByKYLE HIGHTOWER AP sports writerMay 2, 2026, 6:07 PMBOSTON -- Celtics star Jayson Tatum has been ruled out for Game 7 against Philadelphia on Saturday night with left knee stiffness. The team announced the news about 90 minutes before the start of the winner-take-all first-round matchup between Boston and the Philadelphia 76ers. “He just came in today with knee discomfort. The medical team and myself decided for him not to play,” coach Joe Mazzulla said during his pregame meeting with reporters. It is unclear who will start in Tatum's place.Tatum briefly left Game 6 in the third quarter for unspecified treatment to his calf. Tatum, of course, is just 22 games into his return from the torn right Achilles tendon injury he suffered in last season’s playoffs.Popular ReadsThe Celtics downplayed the situation, with Tatum saying afterward that his leg was only feeling “a little stiff.” He said following a quick assessment and some time on the exercise bike he didn’t return because the game was out of hand and the starters had already been pulled.___ AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBAPopular Reads

Call of the Wilde: Tampa Bay forces a Game 7 after a classic battle at the Bell Centre

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Six one-goal games. Four overtime games. Now, Game 7.It’s a fitting way to decide the Canadiens-Lightning series on Sunday night.Gage Goncalves extended Tampa Bay’s season with an overtime goal Friday night, forcing Montreal back on the road to try to close out a thrilling Eastern Conference opening-round series.“We haven’t won anything yet,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “All we did was win a game to send us back to Tampa and keep our season alive. You don’t want to rain on the parade. ... but we haven’t accomplished anything yet.”Both teams have each won twice on the road in the series and home ice has not been an advantage for the Lightning in the postseason. They are just 2-10 in their last 12 playoff games in Tampa Bay, where a raucous crowd always shows up — 460 consecutive sellouts. How even are these teams? The score has been tied or within one goal for all but six minutes in the series. Each team has 14 goals, including nine in 5-on-5 play.“In 14 years in the league, I’ve been in a number of Game 7s, some where we weren’t as good as the other team and some where

Kazuma Okamoto hit his third home run in two days, Brandon Valenzuela homered in an eight-run eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 11-4ByMIKE COOK Associated PressMay 2, 2026, 5:03 PMMINNEAPOLIS -- Kazuma Okamoto hit his third home run in two days, Brandon Valenzuela homered in an eight-run eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 11-4 Saturday afternoon.Lenyn Sosa and Myles Straw also went deep for Toronto, which scored a season high in runs while winning for the sixth time in eight games, but saw George Springer leave with an injury.Byron Buxton homered for the Twins for the third straight game and fifth in six outings, but the beleaguered Minnesota bullpen cost the team again.Eight Blue Jays scored against Luis García (0-1) and Anthony Banda before an out was recorded in the eighth inning. Okamoto and Sosa had RBI singles, and Davis Schneider ended an 0-for-27 skid with a two-run double before Valenzuela’s three-run shot.In the past six games, Twins relievers have allowed 20 runs in 20 1-3 innings.Springer left the game in the third inning after being hit by a pitch on the left foot. Civilians across the Middle East react to the Iran war

Amena found out about the war when air raid alarms woke her. Hossein first heard it when fighter jets blew up a radio station as he listened to it. Jad found out about it on the news, two hours before the bombs fell on his neighborhood. And the parents of several volleyball players found out when their daughters were pulled from the burning wreckage of a school gym. Most Americans have fortunately never seen war firsthand, and most of those who have were troops sent to fight far away. War in your hometown is a strange experience, especially a modern air war without front lines. Things you take for granted, from electricity to the freedom to go outside, disappear. Life's soundtrack becomes sirens and explosions. The danger feels distant until it isn't. Death comes seemingly at random. On February 28, during a U.S.-Israeli surprise attack, missiles hit an elementary school in Minab and a gym in Lamerd, two towns on the Iranian coast. Mir Dehdasht, whose daughter Robab's high school volleyball team was practicing at the gym, rushed over when a neighbor told him about the attack. "The injured were bleeding heavily, some had lost consciousness on the ground, others

How European Libertarians Differ From American Ones

On April 24-26, I attended LibertyCon Europe 2026, the major annual gathering of European libertarian students and academics (held this year in Madrid). I was invited to give two talks, and therefore came to this event for the first time since 2014. I spoke to numerous students, academics, and activists who attended the conference and got a better sense of where European libertarians (or "classical liberals," as some prefer to call themselves) stand at this crucial moment in history. It was interesting to observe similarities and differences with their American counterparts. Not surprisingly, there is a large overlap between the two groups' views and priorities. A high proportion of what I saw and heard at LibertyCon Europe differed little from what I would expect to see at a comparable US event. For example, libertarians on both sides of the Atlantic are deeply concerned about excessive government spending and regulation, growing efforts to impose restrictions on access to various websites (often under the pretext of protecting children), protectionist restrictions on international trade, and more. American libertarians have greatly influenced their European counterparts, and vice versa. As the great Austrian libertarian economist F.A. Hayek put it, "[t]he growth of ideas is an

Huge crowd attends free Shakira beach concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Colombian superstar Shakira gave a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night, an event that the city's mayor said drew 2 million people to one of the world’s most iconic waterfronts. The performance followed similar shows by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, which also were attended by huge crowds that danced on the sprawling sands. For Shakira, it was part of her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” or “Women No Longer Cry,” world tour named after her 2024 album.Shakira's set kicked off around 11 p.m., more than an hour after the scheduled slot, to her fans screaming with excitement and frantic applause as skywriting drones flew overhead, spelling out in the sky, “I love you Brazil” in Portuguese. The megastar spoke fondly about the first time she came to Brazil, some three decades ago.“I arrived here when I was 18 years old, dreaming about singing for you,” Shakira told the crowd shortly after coming on stage. “And now look at this. Life is magical.”The much-loved pop star sang fan favorites such as “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Tortura” and “La Bicicleta." She ended with “BZRP Music Sessions #53/66,” which followed her
