Bowman says Oilers will have different team

EDMONTON – Saying Saturday was not a day for big decisions or announcements, Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman did concede next season’s team will “not be the same group as today.” Two days after the Oilers were eliminated in six games in the first round of the NHL playoffs, Bowman told a media session there are positives in young players like Matt Savoie, Josh Samanski and Vasily Podkolzin, but changes to the roster are definitely needed.“We do need some new players. I don’t know if we’re going to have a dramatically different roster next year,” Bowman said. “We don’t need to rewrite everything but we do need adjustments.”He did agree that some major decisions he made in adding players this season “did not work out,” pointing to goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Andrew Mangiapane.Bowman is facing hard choices this summer. He has to deal with a number of free agents while figuring out how to revamp the roster to improve its goaltending and address glaring defensive deficiencies. Story continues below advertisement Asked his thoughts on how to improve the team defensively, head coach Kris Knoblauch said the issue was mainly “the mentality of wanting to play good defensive hockey.”

Bruins' Charlie McAvoy faces suspension for slash after he was slew-footed

May 2, 2026Updated May 3, 2026, 3:56 p.m. ETBoston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is looking at a long suspension after being ejected for slashing in Game 6 against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, May 1.NHL Player Safety said McAvoy was offered an in-person hearing for slashing the Sabres' Zach Benson, whose dangerous play led to McAvoy's retaliation. That means a possible suspension of six games or more. No date or time was announced for the hearing. The incident happened during the final minutes of the Sabres' series-clinching win against the Bruins.Benson tripped McAvoy with a slew foot, receiving a two-minute penalty. That type of play is dangerous because the recipient of a slew foot is unable to brace himself as he falls.McAvoy, who has dealt with a broken jaw and lost teeth this season, got up and went after Benson with a baseball-swing slash. He received five minutes and a game misconduct.Generally, a slew foot leads to a fine rather than a suspension. No supplemental discipline was announced for Benson as of 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 2.Any suspension that McAvoy receives would be served next season because his team has been eliminated from the playoffs.

Golden Knights build on late-season success under coach John Tortorella in playoffs

SALT LAKE CITY — John Tortorella and the Vegas Golden Knights are off to the second round of the NHL playoffs after pushing aside the pesky Utah Mammoth. Vegas ground out three straight victories to finish off the Mammoth, winning 5-1 on Friday night in Game 6 after consecutive overtime wins. Vegas overcame third-period deficits in its first three victories. After Tortorella took over as coach from the fired Bruce Cassidy, the Golden Knights closed the regular season 7-0-1. They went from a team struggling to stay in the playoff picture to winning a division title for the fifth time in nine seasons. Depth, confidence and experience helped Vegas make winning plays to close out tight games as the series progressed. Mitch Marner and fellow forward Brett Howden specifically answered the bell with big plays. Howden had four goals in the series, and Marner had two goals and five assists. “When you roll four lines, it doesn’t matter too much about where the faceoff is,” Golden Knights captain Mark Stone said. “You can just kind of put whoever out on the ice. But it’s always a new team every year. You always find out who you are in the first

Call of the Wilde: Tampa Bay forces a Game 7 after a classic battle at the Bell Centre

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Six one-goal games. Four overtime games. Now, Game 7.It’s a fitting way to decide the Canadiens-Lightning series on Sunday night.Gage Goncalves extended Tampa Bay’s season with an overtime goal Friday night, forcing Montreal back on the road to try to close out a thrilling Eastern Conference opening-round series.“We haven’t won anything yet,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “All we did was win a game to send us back to Tampa and keep our season alive. You don’t want to rain on the parade. ... but we haven’t accomplished anything yet.”Both teams have each won twice on the road in the series and home ice has not been an advantage for the Lightning in the postseason. They are just 2-10 in their last 12 playoff games in Tampa Bay, where a raucous crowd always shows up — 460 consecutive sellouts. How even are these teams? The score has been tied or within one goal for all but six minutes in the series. Each team has 14 goals, including nine in 5-on-5 play.“In 14 years in the league, I’ve been in a number of Game 7s, some where we weren’t as good as the other team and some where

Now, the Penguins have big questions heading into the summer. The Penguins have several pending unrestricted free agents, with July 1 just two months away. Penguins legend Evgeni Malkin is the most notable of the bunch. With the Penguins focused on getting younger, questions about the 39-year-old Malkin’s future in Pittsburgh have come up. Malkin has recently added a bit more fuel to the fire. While speaking to reporters, Malkin made it clear that he wants to play in the NHL next season and is open to playing for another team even if it’s not Pittsburgh. He shouldn’t have much trouble generating interest, either, as he had 19 goals and 61 points in 56 games this season. Due to this, let’s look at three teams that could look to sign Malkin this offseason if he hits free agency. Montreal Canadiens If the Penguins do not bring back Malkin, the Canadiens could be a team that targets him in free agency. When looking at the Canadiens’ roster, one of their biggest needs is another top-six center.

Jackson LaCombe leads Ducks into 2nd round of NHL playoffs | AP News

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — When Jackson LaCombe signed a $72 million contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks last September, casual hockey fans around North America responded to the news online with countless variations of the same clueless refrain: “Who’s that?”Seven months later, anyone who still doesn’t know about the Ducks’ top defenseman clearly isn’t paying attention to this sport.LaCombe just finished dominating his first Stanley Cup playoff series, scoring nine points — second-most in the entire NHL — and tirelessly spearheading the Ducks’ defensive efforts against Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl while upstart Anaheim eliminated the two-time conference champion Edmonton Oilers in six games. After agreeing to the richest contract ever handed out in Anaheim, LaCombe scored 58 points in a breakout regular season while making the U.S. Olympic team’s roster and leading the Ducks to their first playoff berth since 2018. His performance under the postseason spotlight has cemented everything Ducks fans already knew about him — and his Anaheim teammates think it’s long past time for LaCombe to be known beyond the West Coast. 2 MIN READ 2 MIN READ 1 MIN READ “It’s crazy to me that people are just now figuring it out about him sometimes,” Ducks

St. Louis Blues sign Dylan Holloway to a 5-year, $38.75 million contract | AP News

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues signed forward Dylan Holloway to a five-year contract worth $38.75 million, general manager Doug Armstrong announced Friday.Holloway, who’s set to turn 25 in September before next NHL season begins, will count $7.75 million against the salary cap through 2031. Getting him signed was one of Armstrong’s final big tasks before turning the job over to GM-in-waiting Alexander Steen. His new deal was announced Friday in the aftermath of Edmonton getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The Blues poached Holloway and defenseman Philip Broberg from the Oilers with offer sheets two summers ago.Holloway joins him in signing long term after Broberg got $48 million over six years in January and is now under contract through 2030. Holloway ranked second on the team with 22 goals and was tied for second in points with 51 this past regular season, when St. Louis missed the playoffs.___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl
