Trump's executive order tightening U.S. sanctions on Cuba is a warning to other countries, expert says

By Updated on: May 1, 2026 / 9:34 PM EDT / CBS Miami Add CBS News on Google President Trump signed an executive order Friday tightening U.S. sanctions on Cuba, expanding penalties on the island's government and foreign companies that do business with it.The order builds on sanctions introduced earlier this year and signals that Cuba remains a priority for the administration, even as the United States navigates other international conflicts in Iran and elsewhere, experts say.The executive order is aimed at Cuban government officials, people accused of corruption and people who operate in the country's energy, defense or financial services sectors. It does not name any specific sanctioned individuals. The new measures also increase pressure on foreign financial institutions by threatening their access to U.S. markets if they continue to work with Cuban government entities. The administration says the sanctions are also intended to discourage deeper involvement from foreign adversaries.Andy Gómez, a professor of Cuban studies at the University of Miami, said the executive order carries broader geopolitical implications. He said it can be seen as a warning to countries like Russia and China to keep their distance."This is the hidden message behind what has been written, and that's how

Appeals court blocks FDA rule that allows women to obtain abortion drugs by mail

A maker of the widely used abortion pill mifepristone asked the Supreme Court on Saturday to block an appellate court ruling that cut off mail-order access to the drug just a day earlier, in what was the biggest jolt to abortion policy in the U.S. since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Danco Laboratories, which is also a defendant in the lawsuit in question, asked to block the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision while appeals are pending, saying the appellate ruling "injects immediate confusion and upheaval into highly time-sensitive medical decisions." READ MORE: Court restricts abortion access across U.S. by blocking the mailing of mifepristone The appeals court's unanimous ruling Friday marked a substantial victory for abortion opponents seeking to stem the flow of abortion pills prescribed online, which they view as subverting state bans. It requires that mifepristone be distributed only in person and at clinics, overruling regulations set by the federal Food and Drug Administration. "We're now going to see, I think in a way we haven't before, what the nation will look like when abortion bans are actually in effect," said Mary Ziegler, an expert on abortion law and a professor at University

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is Ripped Straight From the Headlines—Except When It Comes to Its Fantastical Ending

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is Ripped Straight From the Headlines—Except When It Comes to Its Fantastical Ending

Normally, I am against content labels for media, but I might have to make an exception for The Devil Wears Prada 2. This movie should come with a trigger warning, at least for millennial journalists. The fizzy, frothy comedy is also a jewel-box encapsulation of a generation's broken dreams, told through the decline of magazine journalism. The film opens at a journalistic awards ceremony, one of those rubber chicken dinners where journalists give each other plastic trophies to honor worthy (but often little-read) work. Just as our heroine, Andy Sachs (a perky, perfectly neurotic Anne Hathaway), accepts the top honor, she receives a text. Everyone at her table has been fired as part of a corporate cost-cutting deal. Andy makes tearful remarks and goes off to mourn her job and the industry. At the same time, Andy's old nemesis, the fearsome Miranda Priestly—the formidable editor of the (former) fashion powerhouse Runway—is facing a scandal for running a puff piece about a dicey fast fashion company. Runway's owner sees Andy's speech, which has gone viral, and offers her a job as the magazine's features editor in an attempt to revitalize the publication's journalistic credibility. The setup is somewhat strained, but the

Trump tells Congress hostilities in Iran 'have terminated' as war powers deadline hits

12 minutes agoJaroslav LukivandBernd Debusmann Jr,White House reporter, FloridaGetty ImagesPresident Donald Trump said on Saturday that renewing military strikes against targets inside Iran was "a possibility"Iran has received a US response to its latest peace proposal, Iranian state-linked media have said.Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson said the response - which was delivered via Pakistan - was now being reviewed, according to Tasnim news agency. The US is yet to confirm it has replied to Tehran. On Saturday, President Donald Trump he would "soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can't imagine that it would be acceptable".Iranian state media said Tehran's 14-point plan asked Washington to withdraw its forces from near Iran's borders, end its naval blockade of Iranian ports, and for all hostilities - including Israel's offensive in Lebanon - to cease. It also called for an agreement between the two countries to be reached within 30 days. Iranian state media added that the proposal urged the two warring sides to focus on "ending the war" rather than extending a current ceasefire. Referring to the proposal, Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social late on Saturday: "They have not yet paid a big enough price

Unionized workers form alliance with rich tech giants on AI data centers, pushing back on local opposition and redrawing political lines | Fortune

Building trades unions — long fashioned as the voice of the American worker — are now intertwined with the richest companies in the world as they create America’s artificial intelligence economy. Unionized workers are employed on a huge number of massive data center projects and scrambling to recruit new apprentices to feed the explosive demand. They’ve also become an ally of tech giants and tech-friendly government officials, echoing the talking point that the United States is in a critical national security race with China for AI superiority. Unions are a visible force in helping counter fierce opposition in communities and hostile legislation in Congress and legislatures, often aligning with traditional Republican pro-business constituencies and forcing Democrats to choose between them and progressives who want to take a harder line. Unions have aggressively answered complaints about data centers in ways that executives at tech giants and the development firms rarely do, unafraid to bluntly confront concerns about energy and water shortages, rising electric and water bills, or noise and quality-of-life objections. “When people say, you know, ‘data centers are the root of all evil,’ we’re just saying, ‘look, they do create a hell of a lot of construction jobs, which we

Cuba says Trump’s fresh sanctions on its economy amount to ‘collective punishment’

Cuba said Friday that US President Donald Trump's fresh sanctions on the island amounted to "collective punishment," as an enormous May 1 procession outside the American embassy in Havana vowed to "defend the homeland". Trump has mused about taking over Cuba, which lies 145 kilometres from Florida and has been under a nearly continuous US trade embargo since Fidel Castro led a communist revolution that overthrew Washington-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Late Friday, the US president told an audience in Florida that the US would be "taking over" the Caribbean island "almost immediately". In an executive order on Friday, the US leader said he would impose sanctions on people involved in sweeping sections of the Cuban economy, which is steered by the government. Nebraska becomes first state to impose Medicaid work requirements before OBBB deadline

Nebraska became the first state on Friday to implement the federal Medicaid work requirements, mandated under President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill that passed last summer. The bill imposes new 80-hour per month work requirements on able-bodied Medicaid recipients aged 19 to 64 who don't have dependents. These requirements include working or other approved activities, such as school and volunteering. There are exemptions for certain groups, such as parents or guardians of children under age 14 and those with disabilities.Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) suggest approximately 5.2 million Americans nationwide could lose Medicaid coverage by 2034 due to these new work requirements. The CBO estimated the federal policy would increase the number of people uninsured by 4.8 million.A report from the nonpartisan policy research group Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that 28,000 to 41,000 Nebraskans are at risk of losing coverage by 2034 following the implementation of work requirements. (this should be higher with the Nebraska mention) Will move up Health policy experts told ABC News that sharp Medicaid cuts could result in vulnerable Americans, in Nebraska and nationwide, no longer being able to receive care, either by losing coverage or by closing the centers that provide

Recent Books on the Constitution

Recent Books on the Constitution

Each fall, I teach a seminar called Recent Books on the Constitution. I initially designed this course when I visited Georgetown in 2005. At that time, because I tend to read what relates directly to my current projects, I felt that I was not keeping up with the literature. By assigning recent books on the Constitution to read as part of my teaching, I would actually read them. This has really worked for me. I have now read a lot of books on the Constitution. The complete list of all the books I have assigned is below. Since 2005, I have assigned 105 books by 96 authors, with James Fleming, Sandy Levinson, Gerard Magliocca, Eric Segall, Dan Farber, Jonathan Gienapp, Philip Hamburger, Kim Roosevelt, and David Bernstein each making more than one appearance. Over the years, I assigned four books in manuscript before publication. In addition to my manuscript of the book I am now writing on libertarianism, here are the five "recent books on the Constitution" I am assigning for fall of 2026: Eric Claeys, Natural Property Rights (2025) Paul DeHaret, Uncovering the Constitution's Moral Design (2017) Richard Primus, The Oldest Constitutional Question: Enumeration and Federal Power (2025) Louis

8 people arrested at protest during ICE arrest in Brooklyn, NYPD says

Nine people were taken into custody Saturday night after an anti-ICE protest took place outside of the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, according to the NYPD.The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to ABC News that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national whom they claim was previously arrested for assault and criminal drug possession. ABC News has not independently verified claims about Okeke’s alleged criminal history. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seal is seen before a press conference discussing ongoing enforcement efforts to combat human smuggling along the Southwest border of the United States, July 22, 2014, at ICE headquarters in Washington, D.C. Can Lakers survive Thunder? Predictions, odds and schedule for series

May 2, 2026Updated May 3, 2026, 5:01 p.m. ETThe Los Angeles Lakers advanced to the Western Conference semifinals and will face last year's champion, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in a best-of-seven series. The last time these franchises saw each other in the postseason was 2012.The majority of experts and bettors have counted the Lakers out against the Houston Rockets in the first round, but they prevailed and made it past them. But the Rockets aren't a championship team, the Thunder are.The same experts and bettors who counted Los Angeles out in the opening series are doubling down against Oklahoma City. And it makes sense.During their four matchups in the 2025-26 regular season, the Lakers lost all games by an average margin of 29.3 points, the worst regular-season point differential of any playoff matchup in NBA history. Luka Doncic didn't play in two of the four games. Of the two he did play in, he suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain during their April 2 meeting, causing him to leave early. The Lakers lost that game by 43 points and Doncic has been out since.Doncic won't be available to start the series against the Thunder and his timetable is relatively unknown,

Musk’s “World War III” threat in Twitter lawsuit haunts him at OpenAI trial

“I don’t yell” Elon Musk spent three days testifying as the first witness in his trial against OpenAI. Elon Musk seems tired and cranky. On Thursday, he took the stand for the third day in a four-week trial stemming from his lawsuit alleging that OpenAI abandoned its mission and should be blocked from taking the company public later this year. If Musk plays his cards right, Sam Altman could be ousted and OpenAI would remain a nonprofit forever. But Musk stumbled at least seven times in ways that possibly put his chances at winning in jeopardy. Most notable, 1) OpenAI’s lawyer managed to get him to make several concessions over his own lawyer’s objections. 2) He also lost a fight to keep xAI’s safety record off the table, calling his reputation as a supposed AI savior defending OpenAI’s mission into question. 3) He repeatedly appeared dishonest, as OpenAI’s lawyer showed documents contradicting his testimony. And he twice appeared disingenuous, 4) first when confronted with calling OpenAI’s safety team “jackasses,” 5) and then again when admitting that he didn’t know what “safety cards” are, even though his own AI firm issues them. Perhaps most embarrassing, 6) he testified that he never

The First TV Adaptation of Lord of the Flies Is Here. It’s Gripping, Heartbreaking—and Unexpected.

May 4, 2026, 8:00 a.m. ET"Lord of the Flies" is so much more than you remember. The classic 1954 William Golding novel has been a staple of high school English classes for decades, and one of the most formative works of literature of the 20th century, influencing everything from gender-bent homage "Yellowjackets" on Showtime to reality TV (like CBS's "Survivor") to Stephen King. But like so many works of art considered "classics" and used for pedagogy, "Flies" can seem like a relic of the past, a curiosity rather than a warning. But in 2026, our modern age fueled by debates about boyhood and the "manosphere," reminders of the precariousness of democracy, the brutality and pointlessness of war and the very nature of human decorum, there is no wonder "Flies" is back and in living color.Debuting on Netflix May 4 after an acclaimed run on the BBC in the UK earlier this year, "Lord of the Flies" (★★★★ out of four) is the best show of the year, retelling a story that is desperately trenchant and resonant in 2026. Led by an astoundingly talented cast of young actors and brought to life with painterly brushstrokes of vivid color and horrifying imagery, "Flies" is

From beyond the museum walls Monday, works of art will move and take shape as the glitterati of guests from Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman to Venus Williams will fashionably ascend the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s steps and exhibit their creative interpretations of this year's dress code, “Fashion is art.” The question of whether fashion is art has long been topic of conversation for fashion insiders, and this first Monday in May the dress code is leaving nothing up for debate. The dress code for the starry fundraising event calls for guests to “express their relationship to fashion as an embodied art form." Fashion has long drawn inspiration from works of art, leaving guests with no shortage of artistic references to show off. But will guests pull from the fashion archives on Monday or wear custom artistic creations from fashion houses? Archival fashion looks have become a red carpet phenomenon with fashion savvy stars wanting to get their hands on some of the rarer pieces of fashion history. Ubuntu infrastructure has been down for more than a day

Hacktivists have claimed responsibility for taking down the public-facing infrastructure of popular Linux operating system distribution Ubuntu, as well as Canonical, the company that develops and maintains the software. The attack began on Thursday, and affected services that Ubuntu users rely on. “Canonical’s web infrastructure is under a sustained, cross-border attack and we are working to address it. We will provide more information in our official channels as soon as we are able to,” the company said on its website. The hacktivists are believed to have launched a distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, a crude but often effective attack that consists of flooding a target with junk traffic until it overloads or crashes. Ubuntu developers have been discussing the attack on an unofficial Ubuntu community forum, claiming that the attack affects Ubuntu’s security API, and several Ubuntu and Canonical websites. According to a post on a threat intelligence forum, the DDoS attack has also made it impossible for users to update and install Ubuntu. TechCrunch verified that updates failed to install on a test device running Ubuntu. As of this writing, the outage has been ongoing for around 20 hours. When contacted, Canonical spokesperson Lelanie de Roubaix reiterated what the company

Anthropic takes shot at consulting industry in joint venture with Wall Street giants | Fortune

Anthropic announced Monday that it has partnered with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs to launch a new AI-native enterprise services company — one that puts the Claude maker in direct competition with the world’s largest consulting firms for the lucrative business of corporate AI transformation. The venture, backed by approximately $1.5 billion in committed capital, is designed to embed Anthropic’s engineers and models directly into the core operations of mid-size businesses, according to the Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the matter. The target market is enormous. For every dollar companies spend on software, they spend six on services — a ratio that has made consulting a multitrillion-dollar industry and that AI-native firms are now positioning to disrupt. Sequoia partner Julien Bek argued in April that the world’s next great company won’t sell software at all, but outcomes: legal services, financial analysis, insurance processing delivered by AI while billed like consulting. The Anthropic joint venture is essentially that thesis, capitalized and staffed. The new firm is a standalone entity with Anthropic engineering resources embedded directly within its team, according to the official press release, a structure that mirrors Palantir’s forward-deployment model and undercuts traditional consultants by combining

Magic fire coach Jamahl Mosley after 5 seasons | AP News

Jamahl Mosley was fired as coach of the Orlando Magic on Monday, paying the widely expected price after the team blew a 3-1 series lead and got eliminated by the Detroit Pistons in Round 1 of the Eastern Conference playoffs. It was Orlando’s third consecutive first-round playoff exit, and easily the most disappointing. Not only did the eighth-seeded Magic lose all three chances to upset the top-seeded Pistons, but one of those games saw Orlando have a 24-point second-half lead at home and still lose. Orlando missed 23 consecutive shots in that Game 6 loss on Friday, getting booed by fans when it was over. That loss probably was the one that sealed Mosley’s fate, even though the loss in Game 7 at Detroit on Sunday was the one that ended the season.“We’re grateful to Jamahl for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family nothing but the best.” Mosley is the third-winningest coach in Magic history, his 189

The new Amazon Supply Chain Services (ASCS) will offer freight, distribution, fulfillment, and parcel shipping to businesses “of all types and sizes,” including Protcor & Gamble, 3M, Lands’ End, and American Eagle Outfitters. With ASCS, Amazon is betting that other companies will pay to use its sprawling fulfillment network — much like they pay to use its web infrastructure, which the ecommerce giant started offering to third-party businesses in 2006. Amazon has spent years building up a fulfillment network for its own deliveries, further decreasing its reliance on the US Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS. In 2023, Amazon launched a new Supply Chain service, allowing other companies to use Amazon to ship products directly from factories. The new service expands on this, giving companies across the automotive, healthcare, electronics, apparel, and food industries the capability to ship their products through Amazon’s delivery network. Companies that use Amazon Supply Chain Services will be able to store their inventory at Amazon’s fulfillment centers across the globe,

Redistricting war accelerates winner-take-all political combat that's straining American democracy

Willie Simon stood outside the Memphis motel where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968, now a museum dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement. Days after the U.S. Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, Simon feared what the decision would mean not just for Black Americans like himself but an entire country where the political guardrails seem to be coming apart. Simon, who leads the Shelby County Democratic Party in Tennessee, said the court's conservative majority set a precedent that if you're “not in the in-crowd group, they can just erase us.”By weakening a requirement that states draw congressional districts in a way that gives minorities an opportunity to control their own fate, the court escalated the nationwide redistricting war that has seen Democrats and Republicans casting aside decades of tradition in hopes of gaining an edge over the competition. New sessions are scheduled to begin this week in two Republican-controlled states to eliminate U.S. House districts represented by Democrats, and there's more on the horizon. It's the latest example of how the American democratic experiment has been pushed to the breaking point in the decade since Donald Trump rose to power. Justice Neil Gorsuch: ‘Aspirations for Power Need To Be Checked’

Neil Gorsuch The Supreme Court justice discusses the Declaration of Independence, how unchecked power threatens liberty, and what the Founders can teach future generations. Nick Gillespie | 5.4.2026 11:00 AM This week, Nick Gillespie sits down at the U.S. Supreme Court with Justice Neil Gorsuch to discuss his new children's book, Heroes of 1776: The Story of the Declaration of Independence, co-authored with Janie Nitze. Gorsuch and Gillespie examine why the United States is a creedal nation built on shared ideas rather than ethnicity or religion, and why those ideas require constant effort and courage to sustain. They discuss originalism, equal justice under law, the risks of government overreach, and the growing complexity of federal and state regulation. Finally, Gorsuch considers what it will take for the American experiment to endure another 250 years, from learning history to cultivating the courage needed to defend freedom. 0:00—America's 250th anniversary 3:24—Unsung heroes of 1776 4:43—Why America is not an ethnostate 8:00—Originalism and equal justice under the law 11:29—Is America a libertarian project? 13:33—What constitutes government overreach? 14:31—Does America have too many laws? 21:41—Federal bureaucracies and state legislatures 24:03—Political polarization and the judiciary 30:54—What will allow America to have another 250 years? 34:06—How
