Elon Musk’s only expert witness at the OpenAI trial fears an AGI arms race

When do we take AI doomers seriously? That’s a key subtext of Elon Musk’s attempt to shut down OpenAI’s for-profit AI business. His attorneys argue that the organization was set up as a charity focused on AI safety, and lost its way in pursuit of lucre. To prove that, they cite old emails and statements from the organization’s founders about the need for a public-spirited counterweight to Google DeepMind. Today, they called their only expert witness: Peter Russell, a University of California, Berkeley computer science professor who has studied AI for decades. His job was to offer background on AI, and establish that this technology is dangerous enough to worry about. Russell co-signed an open letter in March 2023 calling for a six-month pause in AI research. In a sign of the contradictions here, Musk also signed the same letter, even as he was launching xAI, his own for-profit AI lab. Russell told jurors and Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rodgers that there were a variety of risks associated with the development of AI, ranging from cybersecurity threats to problems with misalignment and the winner-take-all nature of developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Ultimately, he said that there was a tension between the

Judge lets fed's maintenance proceed at historic D.C. golf course despite fears of closure

A federal judge on Monday allowed the National Park Service to proceed with its maintenance plans for the District’s East Potomac Golf Course, a day after a preservation group argued the repairs are actually the start of a full-scale closure and renovation of the public golf course. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes said it is too early for her to issue emergency relief and prevent the park service from proceeding with its scheduled upkeep. But she instructed the agency to alert the court if heavy machinery is brought in to remove trees on the course. Judge Reyes, a Biden appointee, added that she would need to know the park service’s plans in greater detail at that point. “I don’t want to be the overseer of parks and rec. I’m no Amy Poehler,” she said, referring to the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” The D.C. Preservation League, the plaintiff, pushed for the emergency hearing following reports last week in which the Trump administration appeared ready to shut the course and begin extensive renovations to the public property. That work would include landscaping, tree-clearing and completing deferred maintenance, according to news outlet NOTUS. The project was set to begin Monday. A larger

Trump’s World Liberty Financial countersues crypto billionaire Justin Sun for defamation in response to allegations of fraud | Fortune

One of the Trump family’s biggest early crypto backers is now a foe. In response to claims of fraud by billionaire Justin Sun, the Trump-backed crypto firm World Liberty Financial filed a countersuit for defamation on Monday in Florida State court, claiming its former ally engaged in “a scorched-earth pressure campaign” against the crypto project as Sun pushed World Liberty Financial to release hundreds of millions of cryptocurrency he owned. Sun is a crypto entrepreneur reportedly worth around $11 billion, and he’s funneled nearly $200 million into the Trump family’s digital assets projects. That includes the $75 million Sun spent on a cryptocurrency issued by World Liberty Financial and another $100 million on acquiring a store of President Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin. The crypto mogul also attended a dinner Trump spoke at that was exclusively for top memecoin holders. But Sun’s love affair with the Trumps turned into a bitter breakup in September after World Liberty Financial froze Sun’s tokens, preventing him from selling his tranche, which is now worth around $240 million at current market prices. The new lawsuit from World Liberty Financial claims Sun violated contractual obligations by buying tokens on behalf of other investors as well as

Anthony Edwards Injury Update Emerges Before Timberwolves-Spurs Game 1

News ArticlePublishedMay 03, 2026 at 07:55 PM EDTBy Matt AudiletContributing Sports WriterMinnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was upgraded to questionable on the team's injury report Sunday night, just one day before a Game 1 matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. This upgrade indicates that Edwards is attempting to return as soon as possible in the Timberwolves' second-round playoff series.Edwards suffered a bone bruise after hyperextending his left knee during a Game 4 victory over the Denver Nuggets in Round 1. He missed the next two games, but his teammates were able to close out the series in six games and advance to the next round.Initial reports suggested that Edwards would miss at least the first two games of the Timberwolves' second-round series against the Spurs, but this upgrade could mean an earlier-than-expected return for the All-Star guard."Edwards, who has missed the last two games with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, has been cleared for on-court basketball activities," the Timberwolves wrote in a release on Sunday. "He will be listed as questionable for Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs."Edwards posted a YouTube video on Sunday titled "Don't count me out."“It’s the playoffs,” Edwards said

Neil Gorsuch Touts Unanimous Agreement on Supreme Court: ‘Little Changes’

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch said the court’s justices unanimously agree on about 40 percent of cases, and “very little changes” when looking at the court’s history, in an interview with National Review released Monday. The Supreme Court currently has a 6-3 majority of conservative justices. Despite the ideological split, the justices reached a unanimous ruling in 42 percent of cases in the 2024 term, according to the statistics by SCOTUSblog. However, that number is down from 44 percent in the previous term and 50 percent in the 2022 term. “You’re thinking, well, what about those 5–4s, and 6–3s? OK, fine. That’s about a third of our docket, alright?” Gorsuch said. “But only about half of that third are the 5–4s and 6–3s you might imagine, and the rest of them are scrambled every which way. Alright, now those two figures, that 40 percent and that third, same as they were more or less in 1945 when Franklin Roosevelt had appointed eight of the nine justices of the Supreme Court. So, the one thing I know about the Supreme Court is very little changes.” ...Trust in the Supreme Court remains near historic lows, according to polling. A poll by NBC

DHS Demanded Google Surrender Data on Canadian's Activity, Location Over Anti-ICE Posts

The Department of Homeland Security tried to obtain a Canadian man’s location information, activity logs, and other identifying information from Google after he criticized the Trump administration online following the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis early this year.Lawyers for the man, who has not been named, are alarmed in part because they say that the man has not entered the United States in more than a decade. “I don’t know what the government knows about our client’s residence, but it’s clear that the government isn’t stopping to find out,” says Michael Perloff, a senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of the District of Columbia who is representing the man in a lawsuit against Markwayne Mullin, the secretary of DHS, over the summons. The lawsuit alleges that DHS violated the customs law that gives the agency the power to request records from businesses and other parties.Perloff argues that the government is using the fact that big tech companies are based in the US to request information it would not otherwise be able to get. “It’s using that geographic fact to get information that otherwise would be totally outside of its

Schalke seals promotion back to the Bundesliga after 3 seasons away

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Edin Džeko returned in time for the celebrations as seven-time German champion Schalke sealed its return to the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday.“Back where you belong,” former Schalke great Raúl wrote on Instagram.Kenan Karaman’s strike in the 13th minute was enough for Schalke to move an unassailable 10 points clear of third-place Hannover in Germany’s second division. Hannover has three games remaining and Schalke has two. The top two teams secure automatic promotion to the top division.“I cannot put it in words,” said Karaman, the team captain who unleashed the ball inside the far post for his 14th goal of the season. “We waited a long time for this moment, as a club, as a city, all the people around it. I'm just happy that we could take the final step at home because the fans deserve it.”The supporters were urged not to storm the field and hundreds of stewards lined up to ensure there were no injuries, but the fans seemed to be content to celebrate in the stands with flares, beer and songs.“There was a lot of pressure, so much pressure. The last years weren't easy,” Karaman said of three

Redistricting war accelerates winner-take-all political combat that's straining American democracy

Trump ignited the conflict over redistricting last year by urging Republicans to redraw congressional maps to reduce the likelihood that his party loses the U.S. House in the November midterm elections. READ MORE: State redistricting battles intensify following U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Voting Rights Act It was an unusual step, since redistricting normally only takes place after the once-a-decade census to accommodate population shifts. But in 2019 the Supreme Court ruled federal courts cannot prevent partisan gerrymandering, and Trump saw a chance to push the limits. Once Republican-led states like Texas started shifting district lines, Democratic-led states like California countered. The fight was heading for a draw until the Supreme Court's conservative majority issued its long-awaited decision in Louisiana v. Callais. The court weakened the last remaining national impediment to gerrymandering — the Voting Rights Act's requirement that, in places where white people and outnumbered racial minorities vote differently, districts be drawn to give those minorities a chance to elect representatives they prefer. The ruling opened a new set of political floodgates. Republicans in Tennessee plan to erase the only Democratic congressional district, which is majority Black and centered in Memphis, by splitting it up among more conservative suburban

'We deserve a team’: Connecticut fans question WNBA’s decision to move Sun

May 4, 2026, 6:06 a.m. ETUNCASVILLE, CT − Connecticut Sun fans stood in long lines for autographs from their favorite players at the WNBA team's annual open practice and meet-and-greet to kick off the 2026 season at Mohegan Sun arena in late April.Nearly 1,500 season-ticket holders collected signatures from the newest roster members − legendary center Brittney Griner and UCLA national champions Gianna Kneepkens and Charlisse Leger-Walker − and old favorites − UConn grads Aaliyah Edwards and Olivia Nelson-Ododa − alike. The fans know there won't be many more opportunities like this after the Mohegan Tribe ownership group announced March 30 it would sell the Sun to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta. While the reported $300 million sale still has to be ratified by the WNBA Board of Governors, its a foregone conclusions Fertitta will move the franchise to Houston ahead of the 2027 season."It's disappointing because we have a history here," Myra Amsden, a season-ticket holder from Waterford, Connecticut, who has been coming to games for 20 years."The Sun were really robbed it from the tribe. There's too many things that are not right about this whole thing. And it's embarrassing, I think, for the WNBA."The tribe had agreed to

Tesla hits Musk’s threshold for ‘safe unsupervised’ driving

We’ve crossed yet another one of Elon Musk’s self-driving thresholds. Tesla’s fleet of vehicles using the company’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system has driven over 10 billion miles, according to the company’s updated safety page. That means the company has crossed the line Musk set earlier this year for “safe unsupervised” driving. But Tesla owners did not suddenly wake up today to find their FSD (Supervised) vehicles transformed into FSD (Unsupervised) ones. FSD is still just a Level 2 system that requires a fully attentive human driver behind the wheel to monitor the road and be prepared to take over at any moment. In January, Musk said on X that “roughly 10 billion miles of training data is needed to achieve safe unsupervised self-driving” — the implication being that once Tesla reached that milestone, the company would flip the switch and all its customers would suddenly have access to an unsupervised driving system. In January, Musk said on X that “roughly 10 billion miles of training data is needed to achieve safe unsupervised self-driving.”Of course, that would have been an enormously risky move by Tesla, especially when there are still so many questions about the company’s willingness to accept legal responsibility for over a

The pet I’ll never forget: Merlin the sassy pig, who helped me meet my husband

We have lots of animals in our home in Sacramento, California – a dog, two chicks, a pigeon, a bearded dragon, three rats and two rescue cows. But our pig, Merlin, is special.I had a pig obsession for a while. I remember going to visit some animal sanctuaries and getting emotional when I saw the pigs. There’s just something about them that I felt a connection to. I knew how smart they were. I remember telling myself that one day I’d have a pig.Merlin is a mini Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. He was cute as a button when I adopted him in March 2020, when he was just two and a half months old. He loves to cuddle but he can be a bit sassy. If he doesn’t get his way he likes to unplug devices and slam doors. He likes to wear a propeller cap and go on walks; it’s like having an 180lb toddler. We were living in an apartment when we adopted Merlin and I’m surprised we didn’t receive a noise complaint because if he was frustrated or hungry he would squeal and it was deafening. His intelligence was clear to me from day one. Pigs are considered by

Some excerpts from the long opinion in State ex rel. Oklahoma Bar Ass'n v. Barlean, decided Tuesday by the Oklahoma Supreme Court (opinion by Justice Kuehn); Barlean appears to have been a former candidate for the Oklahoma state legislature: On January 5, 2023, Respondent pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges of Domestic Assault and Battery …. Both charges stemmed from violent incidents involving Respondent and a woman with whom he had a romantic relationship. On August 16, 2021, during an argument, Respondent strangled or choked the woman until she gave him her car keys. He was arrested, charged with a felony and bound over for trial. While out on bond, on December 2, 2022, during another fight Respondent pushed the woman down a flight of stairs, injuring her arm. He was arrested again and charged with a misdemeanor. Under Respondent's plea agreement, the felony charge was reduced to a misdemeanor and Respondent pled guilty to both charges. He agreed to supervised probation with requirements including restitution, community service, completion of an intervention program, anger management classes, an alcohol and drug assessment and any recommended treatment. Respondent failed to complete these requirements. The State moved to accelerate his deferred sentence on

"And so we have reason to believe that these school districts in Illinois are not obeying the law and we're going to look into that."EDUCATION DEPT LAUNCHES 18 TITLE IX PROBES AFTER SCOTUS HEARS ARGUMENTS IN EFFORTS TO PROTECT WOMEN'S SPORTS Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights

We started out doing techno sets, and I had a little home studio where we demoed ideas for songs. Our first singer, the actor Rhys Ifans, slept on a mattress in the corner.I had this Steely Dan album, Countdown to Ecstasy. There were bits I really liked. One lyric from the song Show Biz Kids – “You know, they don’t give fuck about anybody else” – just tickled me, because I was very immature. I still am. The song is about rich kids in LA partying and doing coke or whatever, but I thought if we took that line in isolation it could be used as a protest anthem. At the time, I was thinking of the John Major government, but over the years it’s proved applicable to every shower that’s come along. We took the idea to our producer Gorwel Owen. In his studio, he looped the

Thomas, Alito, Roberts Face Removal from Supreme Court Under Proposed Law

Democratic Representative Johnny Olszewski of Maryland is expected to propose a law on Monday that would establish 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices and would mean the removal of Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito if passed. The constitutional amendment called the Reform of Bench Eligibility (ROBE) Act would also end Supreme Court lifetime appointments, apply to current justices and include provisions for a "fair and orderly transition" to the new system, according to a press release from Olszewski’s office. The proposal comes as trust in the Supreme Court remains at historic lows, according to polling. ...A poll by NBC News released in March found that 22 percent of registered voters nationally said they have a "great deal" or "quite a bit" of confidence in the Supreme Court, 40 percent said they had "some" confidence and 38 percent said they had "very little" or "no" confidence. The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters from February 27 to March 3 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. A Gallup poll released in October of last year found that 49 percent of Americans say they trust the Supreme Court either "a

Refrigerant ruling over AIM Act could tests limits of EPA authority

OPINION: Should a federal agency have the power to take and grant market share across a multibillion-dollar market for reasons of its own choosing? Should an executive agency have the unfettered ability to pick winners and losers for a market that supplies products to nearly every building and vehicle? If someone you have never had the opportunity to vote for has the power to make substantive laws that take away or limit your rights to give them to others — maybe in the name of “equity” — is that consistent with liberty? America’s Founders didn’t think so, and neither does Choice Refrigerants, a small business in Georgia that makes refrigerants used in refrigerators, air conditioners and other cooling machines. Choice Refrigerants has filed a petition for writ of certiorari asking the Supreme Court to take up its case and confirm that Congress gave away its rights-affecting legislative power and violated the nondelegation doctrine when it passed the American Innovation in Manufacturing Act of 2020. The nondelegation doctrine theoretically prevents Congress from divesting itself of legislative power, but in practice, it has been a dead letter for roughly 90 years. Recently, several justices have evinced an interest in resuscitating the doctrine

Musk’s “World War III” threat in Twitter lawsuit haunts him at OpenAI trial

“I don’t yell” Elon Musk spent three days testifying as the first witness in his trial against OpenAI. Elon Musk seems tired and cranky. On Thursday, he took the stand for the third day in a four-week trial stemming from his lawsuit alleging that OpenAI abandoned its mission and should be blocked from taking the company public later this year. If Musk plays his cards right, Sam Altman could be ousted and OpenAI would remain a nonprofit forever. But Musk stumbled at least seven times in ways that possibly put his chances at winning in jeopardy. Most notable, 1) OpenAI’s lawyer managed to get him to make several concessions over his own lawyer’s objections. 2) He also lost a fight to keep xAI’s safety record off the table, calling his reputation as a supposed AI savior defending OpenAI’s mission into question. 3) He repeatedly appeared dishonest, as OpenAI’s lawyer showed documents contradicting his testimony. And he twice appeared disingenuous, 4) first when confronted with calling OpenAI’s safety team “jackasses,” 5) and then again when admitting that he didn’t know what “safety cards” are, even though his own AI firm issues them. Perhaps most embarrassing, 6) he testified that he never

How Bad Facts Make Good First Amendment Law

Free Speech Jay Near was a hateful man whose litigation set a vital precedent for free speech. |The Volokh Conspiracy | 5.4.2026 9:20 AM The old legal saying, "bad facts make bad law," might be true in some cases. But that usually occurs when a court strays from its commitment to a neutral set of legal principles, often because a litigant or lawyer is particularly repulsive or persuasive. If a court sticks to those neutral principles, bad facts could make good law when the court demonstrates that the rule of law endures, even in the most difficult circumstances. Jay Near is among the free speech anti-heroes profiled in our book. After arriving in Minneapolis from Iowa, in 1916 he started writing for Howard Guilford's Twin City Reporter, which boasted sensationalist and sometimes racist headlines, such as "White Slavery Trade: Well-Known Local Man Is Ruining Women and Living Off Their Earnings," and used terms like "yids" and "spades." The paper had a reputation for taking bribes from powerful local officials to write scandalous articles about their rivals. As journalist Fred Friendly would write in Minnesota Rag, a 1981 book about Near, Guilford and Near "practiced a brand of journalism that teetered
