Spotify has ruined mood playlists – so our critics have made some better ones instead

Music might be the greatest mood enhancer in the world: it’s certainly hard to think of another art form that can so effectively tip a feeling of happiness into euphoria or create a suitably gloomy space in which to wallow in melancholy. There have always been albums designed to evoke a certain mood, from Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely to Essential Chill Out Vol 2. But in recent years, we seem to have become more interested in the relationship between music and mood. Streaming services are thick with mood-based playlists. There appear to be hundreds of the things on Spotify, from the straightforward (Happy Vibes) to the vague (All the Feels), and they appear to have struck a nerve: Spotify’s own curated mood playlists are now vastly outnumbered by user-generated ones, soundtracking everything from Friday at the Office to – I swear I’m not making this up – Losing Someone to Suicide. There are those who have detected something sinister in all this. Liz Pelly’s 2025 book Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist suggests that the Spotify’s seeming obsession with mood-based playlists is linked to its focus on what it calls “lean-back

Extended interview: Sting

In this web exclusive, the rock musician Sting talks with Mark Phillips about his stage musical, "The Last Ship," in which he stars, and which is being performed on a global tour. He calls the show an elegy for what Newcastle and its people represented to him growing up. He also discusses why, for him, uncertainty is a key component of art; why performing "Roxanne" today is never tiresome; and why, for him, music is a church.

Huge crowd attends free Shakira beach concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO — Colombian superstar Shakira will give a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night in an event that Rio officials say will draw approximately 2 million people to one of the world’s most iconic waterfronts. The performance follows similar shows by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, also attended by huge crowds that danced on the sprawling sands. It is part of Shakira’s “ Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran ” (“Women No Longer Cry”) world tour, named after her 2024 album. The Latina pop star said in an interview with Brazil’s TV Globo that she expects the Copacabana concert to be the biggest of her career. “For me it’s a dream. I always dreamed of singing on this beach, because I think it’s a magical place,” she said in Portuguese, adding that she learned the language before English. Brazil was one of the first countries where Shakira became successful back in the 1990s, thanks to her charisma and the connection she created with the Brazilian public, according to Felipe Maia, an ethnomusicologist who is pursuing a doctoral degree on popular music and digital technologies at Paris Nanterre University. Formed by vocalist and guitarist Jim Adkins, guitarist Tom Linton, bassist Rick Burch and drummer Zach Lind in 1993, they have released 10 albums – including their 2001 breakthrough record, Bleed American. Its hit single, The Middle, peaked at No 5 in the US Hot 100 chart; it has now had more than 1bn streams. The band mark the 25th anniversary of the album with a series of shows this summer including UK appearances in August in Halifax, Cardiff and Gunnersbury Park, London.Jim (centre)This was taken right before Bleed American was released. The photographer wanted to capture the sprawl of Phoenix, so the idea was to go to the outskirts where construction was happening. Beyond that, there was no pre-planned concept or specific pose. We probably would have called each other that morning and asked, “Hey, are you wearing blue?” “I think I’m going to wear red.” “OK, cool. I’m not wearing red.”I’ve known Zach since preschool
