Cherie DeVaux's family drives together to see her make Kentucky Derby history | AP News

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Nearly a dozen members of Cherie DeVaux’s family piled into a big white van, driving all the way from New York to Louisville to watch Golden Tempo run in the Kentucky Derby. Stories were told, shenanigans ensued and only one topic was off limits during the 14-hour drive.“No one was allowed to say we’re going to win because I’m superstitious,” sister Adrianne DeVaux said. “No one’s allowed to say that. Since I was a little kid watching races, we’re not allowed to say we’re going to win.”No jinxes were created on their journey, which turned out to be worth it and then some. They watched Golden Tempo charge down the stretch at Churchill Downs to victory, making DeVaux the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner.“They’re probably not going to sleep,” Cherie said at the celebratory postrace news conference, knowing her family has another long ride to tackle Sunday. “I don’t know if there’s enough Red Bull or energy drinks in the world for them, but they’re probably riding high.” They weren’t exactly riding in silence on the way, though one of Cherie’s siblings lost her voice before starting and dad Butch, Adrianne said, was

Will Golden Tempo race in Preakness? Triple Crown dates after Kentucky Derby win

Updated May 2, 2026, 7:27 p.m. ETGolden Tempo crossed the finish line Saturday at Churchill Downs, winning the 152nd Kentucky Derby and immediately turning attention to a question that has gone unanswered for eight years: Can he win the Triple Crown? That starts in two weeks with The Preakness Stakes. The last horse to win the Triple Crown – the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes – was Justify in 2018. Since then, seven consecutive Kentucky Derby winners have failed to complete the sweep. Four of those horses never even tried, skipping the Preakness Stakes entirely. Last year’s winner, Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott, bypassed the Preakness just days after winning the Derby, citing the horse’s long-term interests. Since 2019, four Kentucky Derby winners have not raced in the Preakness, a shift driven by modern training strategies that prioritize spacing races further apart. Sovereignty went on to win the Belmont Stakes and earned Horse of the Year honors, validating Mott’s decision, but also deepening the debate about whether the Triple Crown format needs to change. The question now is whether Golden Tempo's connections will take the shot. When is the Preakness? Triple Crown race scheduleIf they do, the

Jose Ortiz wins Kentucky Derby, beats brother Irad in historic sweep

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jose Ortiz didn’t just save his best for last to win the Kentucky Derby. The jockey did it the hard way by literally surging back from last place.Ortiz rallied 23-1 long shot Golden Tempo from way back to claim the 152st Derby on Saturday, beating his older brother by a neck. As expected, Irad Ortiz Jr. went over to pat his brother and congratulate him for getting the best out of a colt Jose Ortiz believed had potential.“We always knew this horse had a lot of ability,” the younger Ortiz said. “You could see early in his career we tried things because he’s a lazy horse. I knew always Golden Tempo would be my Derby mount. This is an incredible experience. I just won the Kentucky Derby.”Ortiz became just the ninth rider to sweep horse racing’s two marquee events at Churchill Downs. It came less than 24 hours after he guided filly Always a Runner to his first Kentucky Oaks victory on Friday night with trainer Chad Brown hoping for a Derby/Oaks double. Instead, Ortiz made history for trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first woman to train a Derby winner. With their parents in attendance, he

These 3 Kentucky Derby horses could help their record-setting father make history

Updated May 2, 2026, 3:39 p.m. ETA horse that isn't even racing in this year's Kentucky Derby has a chance to make history Saturday at Churchill Downs.Into Mischief is the sire of three contenders in the 2026 Run for the Roses: Renegade, Commandment and Potente. If one of those horses wins, Into Mischief will set a record for most Kentucky Derby winners sired with four.Into Mischief, a 21-year-old stallion at Spendthrift Farm, is currently in a three-way tie for the record as three of his offspring have already won the Derby: Authentic (2020), Mandaloun (2021) and Sovereignty (2025). The other stallions who have sired three Kentucky Derby winners are Bull Lea (1957), Sir Gallahad III (1945), Falsetto (1906) and Virgil (1886).Renegade and Commandment are likely Into Mischief's best shots to break the record. Both horses had 5-1 odds a few hours before post time on Saturday, though Renegade drew the unfavorable No. 1 post position. The last horse to win the Kentucky Derby from the rail was Ferdinand in 1986.Into Mischief's bloodlines are so well-regarded that his stud fee is $250,000, making him the most expensive stallion in North America for 2026.Although he had a successful racing career with wins

History-making trainer undecided on running Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo in Preakness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Soon after Cherie DeVaux’s wait-and-see answer Sunday morning about her Kentucky Derby winner’s next stop on the Triple Crown trail, an official from the Preakness called to congratulate the history-making trainer and invite Golden Tempo to the series’ middle jewel in Maryland. Getting an official invitation checked off one detail for DeVaux, who on Saturday became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner. Golden Tempo’s Preakness fate could be answered later this week as DeVaux monitors the horse’s recovery from a remarkable yet demanding rally from last place that won the 152nd Derby at Churchill Downs by a neck as a 23-1 long shot. “As long as he’s in tip-top shape, we’ll talk about it,” said DeVaux, who vanned Golden Tempo over to Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, the morning after the race. “It is on the table, but it’s really up to him.” The usual post-Derby dilemma for trainers and owners is whether their horses are up for the two-week turnaround at the Preakness. This year, the race is at Laurel Park on May 16 while the traditional Pimlico Race Course is rebuilt. The Triple Crown’s middle jewel will go off at a shorter 1

Golden Tempo's last-to-first Kentucky Derby win explained

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Watching from the stands, trainer Cherie DeVaux was not worried when her horse Golden Tempo was last in a field of 18 horses for much of the Kentucky Derby. Aboard the horse, jockey Jose Ortiz wasn’t either.By the time the race ended, Golden Tempo won by a neck, bucking the trend of closers not being able to come from behind at Churchill Downs recently and making DeVaux the first female trainer with a Derby champion.“That’s how he runs, so it’s not like we really did anything different than he had done in his previous starts,” DeVaux said. While Golden Tempo got bumped by Ocelli to his outside at the break, 38-1 long shot Six Speed went to the lead out of the starting gate and was joined near the front by So Happy and Danon Bourbon. Golden Tempo could not even be seen in the frame on television as the horses rounded the first turn. “I knew my horse was a deep closer, so I don’t have any interest in being in front early,” Ortiz said. “You can see the way I broke, (then) I go to the rail and save ground.”Six Speed set a fast

Great White is fine after flipping and being a late Kentucky Derby scratch | AP News

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Great White is doing well after flipping before the Kentucky Derby, throwing his jockey and getting scratched minutes before the Triple Crown race, trainer John Ennis said.“He’s perfect,” Ennis told The Associated Press after the race, which was won by Golden Tempo to make Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer with a Derby champion. “Very fresh. (The incident) took nothing out of him.”The big gray gelding who weighs roughly 1,370 pounds was spooked by something while he and the other horses were waiting to get walked into the starting gate for the opening race of the Triple Crown. He threw off rider Alex Achard, who walked away under his own power. The track veterinarians scratched Great White and prevented Achard and Ennis from entering the Derby for the first time. Ennis confirmed Achard was also doing well afterward. Great White flipping caused a delay to the race, which was supposed to start just after 7 p.m. Because of how long it took, horses who had been loaded into the gate had to be backed out.Golden Tempo had not yet gone in.“When you load into the gate, you don’t want to back up,” jockey Jose Ortiz said. “I

So Happy's owners say they passed up millions before Kentucky Derby

Updated May 3, 2026, 4:42 p.m. ETThe primary owners of So Happy told USA TODAY Sports they had a chance to cash in before the Kentucky Derby.Their choice looked like a potentially expensive one after the horse went off as the co-favorite at 5-1 before finishing ninth at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky Saturday May 2.After So Happy won the Grade I Santa Anita Derby April 4, clinching a spot in the Kentucky Derby, potential buyers reached out, according to Hans Maron, who along with his wife Ana are the primary owners of So Happy. Norman Stables LLC also owns a stake in the horse.Hans Maron indicated the top bid was for millions of dollars.Asked if the offer was for seven figures, he responded, "Multiple seven figures."But the Marons, who paid $150,000 for the horse, turned down the offer, according to Hans Maron."I don't want to give the amount because it's really not important," he said in an interview with USA TODAY Sports about a week and a half before the race. "And many people told us we should (accept it). That would be the rational thing to do. And I'm definitely not irrational."I just felt under the circumstances and
