Sabrina Ionescu injury update: New York Liberty guard to have MRI on ankle

May 3, 2026, 9:42 p.m. ETUNCASVILLE, CT — New York Liberty point Sabrina Ionescu will have an MRI Monday after injuring her left ankle Sunday, May 3 in their WNBA preseason finale – a 79-67 victory over the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena.Ionescu drove in for a layup around the 7:40 mark of the third quarter and landed awkwardly, rolling the left ankle. Her feet appeared to get tangled with the Sun's Diamond Miller. Ionescu was seen with a boot on her left leg after the game."[Things are] positive right now," first-year Liberty coach Chris DeMarco said postgame. "We're just going to do the test tomorrow and that's the only update I have."Ionescu hurt the same ankle her rookie year and ended up having season-ending surgery.
