May 4, 2026, 12:54 p.m. ETPop star Britney Spears settled a case of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol by pleading guilty on Monday to a lesser charge of reckless driving.Spears' lawyers entered the plea on her behalf during a hearing in Ventura County Superior Court, north of Los Angeles. The 44-year-old singer was not required to attend the proceeding because it was a misdemeanor case, and she was not present.She was originally charged with a single count of driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol after California Highway Patrol officers arrested her in March.Spears was driving a black BMW 430i "erratically" at high speeds on the highway in Ventura County, and the singer allegedly showed "signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests," the California Highway Patrol previously said.USA TODAY has reached out to Spears' representative for comment.Ahead of the May 4 hearing, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office said on April 30 that Spears would be given the option to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs, an offer that is extended to defendants "without a prior DUI history, a low blood alcohol level, and where there is
